REIGNS Makes a Cinematic Return with ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’
Rediscovering a Forgotten Soul Ballad
On 27th February, UK soul breakout star REIGNS is set to unveil ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’, a track that began as a forgotten soul ballad. Over the years, this piece has been reshaped and re-sung, now infused with a voice that embodies lived experience. Collaborating with Waives, the talent behind the viral hit ‘Collateral Damage’, REIGNS brings forth a blend of emotional intimacy and a vibrant drum & bass undercurrent.
In Conversation with REIGNS
Ahead of the release, REIGNS shared insights with Essentially Pop about the journey of creating ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’, the healing power of music, and the deeper truths unlocked through revisiting the song.
The Right Moment for a Timeless Track
‘Closer Than Your Shadow’ started as a soul ballad that lingered in your memory. What prompted you to finally bring it to life at this moment, and why collaborate with Waives?
“The song was initially played for me by writer/producer Dee Adam. It was a soul ballad that we had a version of, but it fell by the wayside as we focused on new material. Dee rediscovered it while updating her studio and when I heard it again, I understood its meaning on a deeper level. I felt compelled to re-record it. After we laid down the vocals at Dee’s studio, I thought it would be great to see what Waives could do with it. Their understanding of the track’s emotion made it clear that we needed to share it with the world.”
Connecting Through Unconditional Presence
The song expresses themes of unconditional presence and emotional safety. How do you relate to this message today?
“Today, the message resonates deeply with me. When I first sang it, I hadn’t experienced heartbreak or loss. However, after going through those darker moments in life, I felt empowered to re-record it. I believe this version can truly connect with others who are navigating their own struggles.”
Building Creative Chemistry with Waives
This marks your second collaboration with Waives following the success of ‘Collateral Damage’. How has your creative relationship grown?
“Waives prefers to remain out of the spotlight, so it’s a privilege to collaborate with them. We share a unique understanding, and it just feels natural to work together.”
Delivering Duality in Performance
Your vocal delivery on this single is both powerful and vulnerable. How do you convey this emotional contrast in a drum & bass framework?
“Interestingly, we didn’t record it in a drum & bass context. The initial recording was acoustic, featuring just piano and vocals, which highlighted the power of the song. The lyrics themselves evoked passion and strength in my performance.”
Navigating Public Pressure as an Artist
Given the pressures of being in the public eye, how do you maintain authenticity?
“I strive to be as transparent as possible. Engaging with my followers on social media feels therapeutic. Sharing our experiences creates a sense of connection, and it’s comforting to know we can support each other.”
Embracing a Loyal Fanbase
Your daily TikTok performances have garnered a dedicated following. How has this impacted your confidence and artistic direction?
“I feel incredibly blessed! It’s a dream come true to have fans sing back the lyrics to unreleased songs at my shows. Their support continually motivates me.”
Memorable Live Moments
You’ve enjoyed a succession of live performances. Which recent show felt like a turning point for you?
“My last headline show at Paper Dress Vintage was unforgettable. Performing new songs for my fans and sharing an emotional moment about my late cousin made it a poignant experience. Connecting with everyone afterward was the perfect way to close out 2025.”
Learning Through Collaborations
Having collaborated with various notable names in the electronic scene, what have you learned about your sound and identity?
“I’m grateful for those experiences. While I love dance music, my true passion lies in soulful pop and developing my artist project.”
Looking Ahead to ‘Love Languages’
With your debut album ‘Love Languages’ set for 2026, how does ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’ fit into your artistic vision for this new chapter?
“It’s a fascinating track because of its drum and bass undercurrent. Yet, when performed live with my band, it becomes a powerful anthem. Unlike past collaborations where vocals felt secondary, ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’ positions the vocal at the forefront, seamlessly integrating with the album’s themes.”
Conclusion
As REIGNS prepares to release ‘Closer Than Your Shadow’, the journey reflects not just a resurgence of a long-forgotten ballad but also a profound evolution as an artist. With a blend of soul and modern influences, this track promises to resonate deeply with listeners, marking a significant step in REIGNS’ musical journey.
