On the glorious repertoire of this celebração, Senzala e Favela, it isn’t the proverbial ghost of Banquo that graces an altogether festa para os ouvidos – a feast of samba music really – but the blithe spirit of the legendary Brasilian composer, vocalist drummer and vocalist Wilson das Neves. And rightfully so, for he belongs here albeit the fact that he passed away tragically just days before the musicians were to enter the studio to lay down the tracks for what was to be his last – and most certainly – a palimpsest of his most significant music. As proof,…
A.S. Fanning, Louis Brennan and The Travelling Circus of MiserySilent Green, Berlin28th February 2024 Nick O’Leary braved an evening at an old crematorium to see A.S. Fanning and Louis Brennan and The Travelling Circus of Misery kick off their German tour as part of the Zeitgeist Irland 24 festival. Walking through the gated archway to the old crematorium under the glow of a waning moon, there was a stillness in the air before a cool breeze swept across the long pathway leading through the gardens to the dimly lit entrance. Leaves danced across the gravel. Had we stirred the spirits…
11 The popular Body and Soul Festival, which takes place in Ballinlough Castle in Meath, and fuses music with art and alternative culture, confirmed there will be no 2024 event with a view to “evolving further” in the longer term. The Irish festival scene is thriving at the moment. Compared to ten years ago, while the events have evolved, there remains a similar number, with more sell outs and massive growth of the country’s biggest event, Electric Picnic. That said, long-term festival goers often still feel that former summer staple Oxegen has never really been replaced. A difficulty facing events…
This is, without question, one of the most incredible albums ever to be released & truly solidified Curtis Mayfield’s true genius. This album broke so much ground that it’s truly scary that it’s concepts were all the workings of one individual. This was the soundtrack to a film and holds the distinction of being one of the precious few sountracks to out gross the film it scored. The album as reached number 1 on both the R&B & Pop charts, and set such a standard for how soundtracks were to be recorded from that point on. It was truly an…
Louisiana singer/songwriter Marc Broussard looks back at 2004 as a great time for music. At the time, he was signed to Island Def Jam records, which released his major-label debut, “Carencro,” that year, and he opened for Maroon 5 and the Dave Matthews Band. Now 20 years later, the Bayou soul singer is in the midst of a 20th anniversary tour celebrating that album. The tour stops here on March 13 at Thunderbird Music Hall in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood, with Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers opening. “It was just kind of a coming of age for a lot of…

A Philadelphia songwriting, production, and performing duo who were prominent at Philadelphia International during the ’70s, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead also scored a number one R&B hit as vocalists. Their single “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” was number one R&B in 1979 and peaked at number 13 pop. The two were members of the Epsilons as teens, a band that toured with and were managed by Otis Redding until his death in 1967. They later signed with Stax and had a moderate hit in 1970 with “The Echo.” When Lloyd Parkes left, McFadden & Whitehead changed their name to Talk of the Town and began working with Gamble & Huff. Although they…
Kenyon Dixon has released his EP, The R&B Love: Soul of the ’70s. It’s the first of multiple installments of the deluxe version of his latest album, The R&B You Love. “These installments of the deluxe are super intentional,” Dixon tells Rated R&B. “I’m such a fan of the music that got us here. I always want to find a way to pay homage to our musical pioneers and heroes.” As its title suggests, Soul of the ’70s is dosed with sweet and sultry tunes inspired by the golden age of soul. The project includes the previously shared Grammy-nominated single “Lucky,”…
