Bayonet Dismemberment’s New Single: “Skull Crushed By a Tank”
A Gruesome Exploration of Anti-War Themes
Vancouver-based brutal death metal band Bayonet Dismemberment has once again pushed the envelope with their latest single, “Skull Crushed By a Tank.” This track serves as the lead piece from their upcoming EP of the same name and captivates listeners with its stark anti-war message, utilizing visceral and graphic imagery that is anything but subtle.
Musical Composition and Style
“Skull Crushed By a Tank” unfolds at a deliberate pace, reflecting the slow, ominous advance of the titular tank. The band employs a haunting three-note riff that, in a different context, could easily belong to a doom metal ensemble. However, Bayonet Dismemberment harnesses this power to create an atmosphere of dread, repeating their central theme to the brink of parody. The inclusion of Ricky Myers from Suffocation adds an extra layer of intensity, but the band’s core sound remains distinct and compelling.
Insights from the Band
Vocalist Landon Furoy shared insights about the songwriting process, highlighting the collaborative effort that went into creating the track:
“The skeleton of the song was written by our guitarist Christian and I in my living room initially and was one of the first songs we have written this way. In the pre-production process, I programmed basic drums and structured the track and then we had Pope (drummer) rework it through rehearsals alongside Colin (guitar). Pope mostly wrote a lot of the final drums in the studio for this project.”
Recording and Production
All recording for vocals, bass, and guitars took place at Colin’s studio in Richmond, with the final mix handled by the band’s founding ex-guitarist, Andre Urquidi of A Mourning Star. The mastering was expertly completed by Cameron Argon, known for his work with Big Chocolate and Disfiguring The Goddess.
Collaboration with Ricky Myers
The band was fortunate to connect with Ricky Myers through local musician Johnny Ciardullo. Furoy described the moment he reached out for collaboration:
“While enjoying too many summer beers with Pope one day, I worked up the nerve to reach out to Johnny and ask him to put in a word for us since Suffo is such a huge inspiration to us. He reached out to Ricky on our behalf and we got in touch. I had a rough idea of how I wanted everything laid out and sent him a demo, and once I got the raw vocals back, it blew my mind even before the mix.”
Furoy expressed gratitude towards both Ricky and Johnny for their crucial roles in the project.
Artwork and Visuals
The artwork for the single and the EP features an original oil painting by Julian Mortuus, an artist known for creating visuals for various notable bands in the metal scene.
