Exploring the Journey of Culled: A Conversation with Shane Hawco
Shane Hawco: A Musical Journey
Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Shane Hawco, the driving force behind the Canadian grindcore band Culled. With a storied history of fronting bands like Wake, Thorazine, and Disciples of Power, Shane’s musical evolution has been captivating to witness.
From Bestir to Culled: An Evolution
Let’s go back a few years when you were living in Edmonton, Alberta. You had started Bestir, but that seemed to be a bit short-lived. However, a couple of guys from Bestir ended up in Culled. Do you see Culled as an extension or evolution of Bestir or a whole new project that just happens to have some of the same guys?
Bestir was established in 2015 as an innovative fusion of grindcore’s chaotic speed and the heavy riffs of doom and sludge. After the Disciples of Power reunion fell apart, I collaborated with fellow Edmonton musicians interested in this unique blend. Our EP gained attention from Decibel magazine and a Philly label, Hibernation Release. Unfortunately, internal tensions led to the band’s dissolution, paving the way for Culled. This new project retained the essence of Bestir while introducing more complex guitar work and profound political themes. Our debut album, “Thin the Herd, Fail to Learn,” was released in October 2018.
The Meaning Behind the Name
Where did you get the inspiration for the band name? It’s simple but effective. I’m surprised no one used it before!
The name Culled reflects our lyrical focus on societal empathy and the tendency to vilify empathetic approaches. The idea of being “culled” from societal norms represents a call for change. We’re dedicated to fostering a culture that embraces empathy and strives to minimize harm.
The Creative Process: Collaboration Over Tradition
Does Culled function as a ‘traditional’ band, where you get together to rehearse, jam, write, and record all together, or is it a hybrid where people bring in their parts?
Our process is primarily collaborative. Ben typically brings initial ideas to the group, which we then develop together, ensuring everyone contributes to the final product.
Record Labels and Collaborations
How did you guys hook up with HPGD Records in the US?
Camerion from Hibernation Release connected us with HPGD Records for the release of our EP, “Psycles.” They stepped in to help us when Hibernation decided to focus on fewer releases.
Decibel Magazine and Promotion
In a related question, you guys had the debut of your most recent EP, Psycles, in collaboration with Decibel Magazine. How did that come about?
Our relationship with Decibel dates back to the Bestir days. We worked with Jon Asher for the promotion of “Psycles,” and he reached out to Decibel, given our history with them. We feel privileged to have their support in sharing our music.
The Physical vs. Digital Debate
In this age of digital music, do you still see a need or desire to produce physical media?
Yes, we believe in the importance of physical media despite the digital landscape. Physical albums represent a personal investment in music and provide a tangible experience for fans. We want to create something that audiences can cherish and reflect upon.
The Importance of Music Videos
How critical is it to do videos these days? I know Culled has shot a few videos, but how do you stand out when almost every band on the planet can put a video online relatively cheaply these days?
Videos are crucial for visual storytelling. We aim to keep our videos simple and reflective of our live performances. Our recent video for “Halo of Flies” was shot at The Starlite Room, a venue that has greatly supported the Alberta music scene. We hope our visuals resonate with audiences and encourage them to engage with our themes.
Shifting Perspectives on Anger and Awareness
As a lifelong veteran of the extreme music scene, you have always had socially aware lyrics. Do you feel there is a point when you shift (or shifted) from angry young man to grumpy old man? Where does that well-spring of anger come from?
I’ve definitely noticed myself leaning towards the ‘grumpy old man’ stereotype. However, my motivation has shifted from anger to a desire for awareness and empathy. I believe individual actions can lead to significant change and that understanding our societal tensions is crucial.
Supporting the Metal Scene
I noticed you are one of the few bands in the area that will do all-ages shows. How critical are those shows to the health of the metal scene? Do you plan to tour at all or just select shows and festivals?
All-ages shows are essential for cultivating the next generation of metal fans. We’re excited to see more venues hosting these events, and we aim to play as many as possible to support young audiences and musicians.
The Future of Culled
You have a couple of EPs out now. What’s next?
We are currently focusing on our first full-length album. The EPs have helped us refine our sound, and we’re excited to explore new directions that a full-length project allows. We’re taking our time to ensure it all comes together in a meaningful way.
Conclusion
Shane Hawco and Culled continue to push the boundaries of extreme music while advocating for empathy and awareness. As they prepare for their next chapter, their commitment to their craft and message remains strong, promising exciting developments for fans and the metal community alike.
