The Formation of Axe Dragger
Axe Dragger started as a remote collaboration between guitarist Bob Balch and drummer Pete Campbell. Their inspiration stemmed from classic metal icons such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Dio. As the project evolved, Glaze and Isaksson were brought into the mix, solidifying the band’s lineup.
The group wears its influences proudly on their sleeves, especially in their first song “Axe Dragger.” This heavy, mid-tempo track is characterized by nimble riffs, powerful vocals, and evocative lyrics that delve into themes of battling inner demons, wielding swords, and the struggle for souls.
“This was the first song we wrote,” Balch explained. “When drummer Minnesota Pete Campbell reached out about collaborating on a metal record, those riffs came to me almost instantly. The song pretty much wrote itself.” He added, “I thought Terry Glaze would sound fantastic on it, so we sent it over to him. When we heard the vocals and lyrics, we knew we had something special. I mean — he sings the words ‘heavy metal’ in the first verse! That song ignited a fire in all of us and ultimately led to the entire record.”
The Journey of Terry Glaze
Terry Glaze was a key player in Pantera’s early days, contributing to their first three albums: 1983’s Metal Magic, 1984’s Projects in the Jungle, and 1985’s I Am the Night. However, he departed from the band in 1986 due to creative differences regarding their musical direction. While Glaze favored a glam metal sound, the rest of the band sought a heavier approach, leading to Phil Anselmo stepping in as the new frontman for 1988’s Power Metal.
After leaving Pantera, Glaze formed the hard rock band Lord Tracy, which released their only album, 1989’s Deaf Gods of Babylon, before disbanding in 1991.
