Exploring the Evolution of Scare the Children
My journey with Scare the Children began nearly as soon as the band formed. I first encountered them at the now-defunct Temple Bar in Beijing during one of their legendary all-night Halloween parties in 2016. At that time, their presentation was less polished, with simpler costumes and members switching instruments. The vibe reminded me of a Beijing-based version of Mushroomhead, captivating the audience with an intriguing allure.
Transformation Over Time
As the years have passed, Scare the Children has undergone a significant transformation in both their sound and visual presentation. They have evolved into a manifestation of a haunting nightmare, reflecting the trials and tribulations faced by the band members, intertwined with dark themes that enrich their music and live performances. Their latest album, Tales, released in 2023, marks a new chapter in their artistic journey.
Return and Reinvention
After spending several years in Bangkok, Thailand, where vocalist Psy Sadako operated Afterlife Bar, the band has returned to China with a fresh lineup, grotesque new faces, and a revitalized attitude. They have also released a new video for “At the End of the Rope,” showcasing their latest artistic direction.

The Next Chapter
What is new with the band?
This marks a significant new chapter for Scare the Children. The injection of new members has brought fresh energy and a renewed sense of purpose. It’s not merely about becoming heavier or darker; it’s about the chemistry we share now. The bond among us is stronger than ever, pushing each other to improve. We’re amplifying our theatrics, deepening our music, and expanding our reach more than before.
Performances in Thailand
Did the band perform in Thailand during your time there?
Yes, we managed to perform twice despite the band’s overall quietness. With the old lineup and a local drummer named Kenny, we played at Afterlife bar in Bangkok, which was a special show due to its perfect ambiance. Our second performance took place on Koh Phangan Island, which was a wild experience but still memorable.
Influences from Thailand
Did your time in Thailand shape the current version of Scare the Children?
Absolutely. My time in Thailand was enjoyable but also challenging, particularly towards the end. Returning to Beijing was not easy either. Personal struggles and surrounding events fueled a lot of anger within me, which I channeled into this new phase of Scare the Children. This version of the band embodies that frustration and survival instinct. I’m investing everything I have into this project.
Character and Stage Evolution
What changes can we expect in the band’s characters and stage show?
The most striking change is in our guitarist’s character — now portrayed as a twisted monster born from a failed experiment. His mask represents multiple personalities, aligning perfectly with the psychological themes in our new music. The rest of us have made more subtle adjustments to our costumes, embracing darker details. However, there’s a sense that some characters are on the verge of transformation again, reminiscent of caterpillars preparing for metamorphosis. Our stage show has focused on creating a powerful and personal sound, complemented by custom video visuals, resulting in an immersive experience that feels like a descent into our world.
Reunited in China
Is the entire band now based in China?
Yes, we are all back in China now. Being reunited has brought a solid sense of unity, significantly influencing our approach and energy towards the band.
The Current Music Scene in China
How does the music scene feel in China currently? Are there exciting new bands emerging?
The scene is still vibrant, but it’s different from what it used to be. We’re all working to keep it alive in our own ways. Since we recently got back on tour, we haven’t explored many new bands yet. However, we’ve shared the stage with some impressive acts like Strangle Mind, a grind deathcore band, and our long-time friends, Chimaira Cult. Most of our current opening acts are new to us, which is exciting as we hope to discover fresh talent during our tour.
Collaboration with Dr. V’Agent
Can you share any memorable experiences with Dr. V’Agent?
Dr. V’Agent and Scare the Children share a long-standing friendship with many similarities, especially in our theatrical presentation. We’ve played numerous shows together, including one where I performed a Manson song with them. They always travel with their own V’Agent mobile, underscoring their dedication to their craft. Sharing the stage with them is always a blast.
New Music Video Release
What is the story behind your new video, “At the End of the Rope”? Who directed it?
This song tells the tragic story of a married woman whose husband goes to war and fails to return, leaving her to raise their two children alone. She believes he’s dead until she discovers he left her for another woman. Overcome with betrayal, she drowns her kids before taking her own life, haunting her home thereafter. The video was created by our talented friend, George Muse, and we’re thrilled with the result.
Future Aspirations
What are your future plans for the band?
We aim to continue evolving our music, delving into more psychologically twisted and personal horror tales. Our goal is to take our music beyond China, performing internationally and connecting with new audiences. We’ll keep pursuing what feels authentic to us. Indeed, the sky is the limit, just like life.
Conclusion
Scare the Children’s evolution reflects the resilience and creativity of the underground metal scene in China. With new members, a darker sound, and a dedication to theatrical performances, they are set to captivate audiences both locally and internationally. As they continue to push boundaries and explore new themes, fans can look forward to witnessing their journey unfold.
