Girl group Rescene will make their debut late next month, but before that they’ve pre-released Yoyo alongside a shortened music video. The song positions them in the space formerly occupied by acts like GWSN and LOONA — a little quirky and ethereal with nuanced production that often shifts tone and rhythm.
Those who are missing those two groups may find plenty to love here. Yoyo certainly establishes an atmosphere. Its sense of texture is palpable, unveiling a sensory feast with various synth tones. I crave a more potent energy driving these textures, as the song slows too many times for my taste. It’s also missing the knockout melodies that would keep me coming back for more. The chorus is mildly catchy, but too flat to really draw me in. As it stands, I’m more enthralled with the style than the track itself, but this leaves plenty of room for Rescene to grow into material that fully harnesses their potential.
