Carla Harvey: A Multifaceted Artist on the Rise
New Single Release: “Hell or Hollywood”
CHICAGO: (Friday, June 6, 2025) — The highly anticipated single “Hell or Hollywood,” from The Violent Hour’s upcoming EP featuring guitar legend Zakk Wylde, has been officially released via Megaforce Records. You can listen to it here.
Vocalist and lyricist Carla Harvey reflects on her creative journey: “I wanted to write a song that felt the way I did when I first moved to Los Angeles at twenty,” she shares. “It captures the essence of my motorcycle boots hitting the Sunset Strip for the first time. I drove across the country with nothing but a paper map, no friends, no plan—just a dream. Each day was a battle for survival, filled with moments that nearly broke me, contrasted by euphoric highs that made it all worthwhile. That’s what ‘Hell or Hollywood’ embodies: the chaos, illusion, and grit in perfect juxtaposition. Wouldn’t leave it if you could…”
The Musical Collaboration
Charlie Benante of Anthrax, who composed the music and played all the instruments on the EP, describes the project’s sound. “Carla grew up loving Guns N’ Roses, and since they were influenced by Aerosmith, I aimed to pay tribute to both with this track. The riff on ‘Hell or Hollywood’ stands strong on its own—it has a swagger that engages even without vocals. Zakk Wylde’s solo adds raw, six-string grit that elevates the entire track. You hear it, and you instantly recognize it’s him,” Benante asserts.
About Carla Harvey: A Renaissance Woman
Carla Harvey is not your typical artist; she holds a diverse array of titles, including comic book author, embalmer, and musician. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Carla’s childhood was shaped by the city’s grit and resilience. Navigating life as a biracial child in a fractured community was challenging, but she found solace in art, music, and self-expression. Balancing her studies at the prestigious College for Creative Studies with various odd jobs, she saved every penny for a one-way ticket to Los Angeles.
At the age of twenty, Carla ventured to Hollywood, embarking on a journey that would define her life. In LA, she acted in television shows like “Rules of Engagement,” played in different bands, and pursued her passion for music. Alongside her artistic endeavors, Carla’s academic pursuits led her to earn a Bachelor of Mortuary Science, graduating as valedictorian, and a Master of Science in Thanatology. She became a licensed funeral director and embalmer, even founding her own grief counseling service while touring with The Butcher Babies.

Her treasures include Rainbow Bar and Grill drink tickets from the ’90s and a poker chip from Lemmy’s last birthday party.
Artistic Inspirations
Carla’s creative heroes, such as Russ Meyers, Robert Williams, Robert Crumb, and Charles Bukowski, reflect her appreciation for bold and raw artistry. Over her career, she has released six albums, multiple comic books, and even penned a novel, “Death and Other Dances” in 2014. Yet, she remains grounded, often expressing that she is still just a blue-collar kid from the Midwest with big dreams.
