Corey Taylor’s Wild Encounters with Rock Legends
In a recent interview with Classic Rock, Corey Taylor, the renowned frontman of Slipknot and Stone Sour, shared entertaining anecdotes from his experiences with various celebrities in the music industry. His stories featured collaborations with notable figures such as Dave Grohl, Velvet Revolver, and Anthrax, as well as delightful moments spent with the QI Elves. Among the more adventurous tales, Taylor recounted a memorable night with Metallica, indulging in their backstage stash until it was completely depleted. Yet, it was his recollection of meeting the late Dimebag Darrell, the iconic guitarist of Pantera, that stood out the most.
The First Meeting: A Night in Dallas
Corey Taylor took us back to 1999, recounting the chaos that ensued during his first encounter with Dimebag. The two met in Dallas when Slipknot opened for Coal Chamber. Taylor’s storytelling brought the vibrant characters to life: “The first time we played Dallas, Dime and Vinnie [Paul, ex-drummer of Pantera, and Dimebag’s brother] came over. We ended up at a Clubhouse, and they proceeded to get us so shitfaced it wasn’t even funny,” Taylor recalled.
Pranks and Challenges
As the night unfolded, Dimebag and Vinnie were determined to have fun at Taylor and his bandmates’ expense. Taylor remembered, “Their whole thing was all about doing pranks on people. Clown [Shawn Crahan, Slipknot’s percussionist] said, ‘Whatever you think of trying, I’m not going to balk.’” One of the chefs at the venue hollowed out a tomato and stuffed it with incredibly hot red chili peppers. Dimebag challenged Clown, asking, “How much is it gonna cost for you to get all this down?” Clown replied, “I don’t need your money,” and proceeded to eat it as if it were a regular apple.
The Urinal Incident
The antics continued as they ventured into the men’s restroom. While they were at the urinals, Dimebag spotted a piece of gum stuck on one of the urinal cakes. He turned to Clown and said, “Alright, Clown, how much would it take…” Before he could finish, Clown reached down, grabbed the gum, and chewed it. Taylor described the moment as “incredibly repugnant,” showcasing the wild spirit of the evening.
Dimebag later fondly remembered the incident, stating, “Clown was the one motherfucker I couldn’t get to budge; he truly fucked me up!”
