BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Unveils Upcoming Album “Engines Of Demolition”
Release Details
In a recent interview with the JJO Discover New Music Podcast, Zakk Wylde shared exciting news about BLACK LABEL SOCIETY’s forthcoming album, “Engines Of Demolition,” set to be released on March 27 via MNRK Heavy. This album, which follows 2021’s “Doom Crew Inc.,” boasts a total of 15 tracks, including previously released singles “Name In Blood,” “Broken And Blind,” “The Gallows,” and “Lord Humungus.” A standout track titled “Ozzy’s Song” serves as a heartfelt tribute to legendary BLACK SABBATH frontman Ozzy Osbourne, Wylde’s longtime collaborator.
Songwriting Process
Five-Year Gap: A Time for Reflection
Discussing the five-year hiatus between albums, Zakk explained, “Usually when we’re doing a BLACK LABEL album, my wife [and manager] will just say, the fellas are gonna be out here in a month… So, I’ve got a month to start writing riffs.” He emphasized the importance of spontaneity in songwriting, stating that overthinking can hinder creativity. “If you’re sitting on a piece of music for a long time, you constantly want to change it and you’ll never think it’s good enough,” he noted.
Inspiration During the PANTERA Celebration
Wylde reflected on the influx of ideas he experienced in 2022 during the PANTERA celebrations. “There was an implosion of ideas, and then we started the PANTERA celebration,” he recalled. “I figured after we got done writing, we’ll put the new BLACK LABEL album out.” He acknowledged the challenge of balancing touring with PANTERA while still nurturing new material for BLACK LABEL SOCIETY.
Writing “Ozzy’s Song”
Creating a Tribute
In a January 28 Q&A session in London, Zakk shared insights on the creation of “Ozzy’s Song.” “I actually wrote the music before… I had the music done, and I was just, like, ‘I’m really happy with the way it came out,'” he explained. Following the loss of Ozzy, Zakk found inspiration to finalize the lyrics, reflecting on memories and the emotional impact of the tribute.
Recording at the Black Vatican
As with previous albums, the bulk of the songwriting and recording for “Engines Of Demolition” took place at Zakk’s home studio, aptly named the Black Vatican. “I mean, once we get out on the road… there’s not that much that I do writing,” Wylde elaborated. He described how different instruments influence his creative process, noting that electric guitar inspires heavier riffs, while piano leads to more reflective melodies.
The Band’s Legacy
Formed in 1998, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY has consistently delivered hard-hitting music while Zakk Wylde also maintains a significant role in Ozzy Osbourne’s band. Notably, albums such as “Order Of The Black” (2010) and “Catacombs Of The Black Vatican” (2014) achieved remarkable success, breaking into the top five of hard rock album charts.
