Venue and Atmosphere
The decision by Alter Bridge to perform at the intimate Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline raised some eyebrows, especially considering the venue’s location approximately 15 miles north of Edinburgh. With a capacity of up to 1500, it appears that the attendance was capped at around 1200 due to safety regulations—a prudent choice on a sweltering 30-degree evening, ensuring a packed house.
Upon entering, the first detail that struck me was the slanted standing area, which offers a superior viewing experience compared to similar venues like the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. This design feature allows for a better sightline for all attendees in that section.
Support Act: Overgrown
The support slot was filled by the rising British rock band Overgrown. Unfortunately, due to delays returning from Hellfest, I arrived just 30 minutes before Alter Bridge took the stage and missed their performance entirely. However, feedback from friends who caught their set indicated that they made a strong impression, leaving me eager to catch them in the future.
Alter Bridge Takes the Stage
Thanks to the venue’s scheduling, which was affected by the Scotland vs. Brazil football match, Alter Bridge was quick to take the stage, launching into their set just 20 minutes after the last applause for Overgrown. The atmosphere was electric, as the crowd comprised ardent fans—many wearing Alter Bridge shirts—demonstrating the band’s deep connection with their audience.
Setlist and Performance
The setlist mirrored their recent Hydro performance, with the notable absence of ‘Playing Aces’. However, this did not detract from the show, as the band delivered a phenomenal set that showcased their prowess as an arena-ready act. Myles Kennedy’s vocals were exceptional, captivating the audience from the very first note and maintaining that grip throughout their hour and forty-minute performance.
For a venue not typically associated with hard rock, the sound quality was impressive. Mark Tremonti’s guitar solos resonated powerfully, a testament to the technical setup at the Alhambra. This concert, along with their smaller Belfast show, served as a warm-up for their upcoming appearance at the ‘Blackbird Festival’ in Cardiff, but the professionalism displayed by the band made these performances feel special for Scottish and Northern Irish fans.
Highlights of the Night
The fourteen-song set featured a significant number of tracks from their debut album, ‘One Day Remains’, reviving classics beyond just ‘Metallingus’. The emotional resonance of ‘Blackbird’ contrasted beautifully with the high-energy ‘Rise Today’, proving the band’s versatility and ability to engage their audience fully.
Tremonti’s lead vocals on ‘Burn It Down’ showcased his range and talent, while Kennedy’s increased guitar work added complexity to their sound. The show culminated with ‘Isolation’, bringing the evening to a rousing close, leaving the audience hot but thoroughly satisfied after experiencing such high-caliber live music.
Conclusion
This concert demonstrated that Alter Bridge deserves consideration as headliners for major festivals instead of relying on the usual suspects. Their performance at the Alhambra Theatre proved that they have the capability to fill arenas with passionate fans, showcasing the evolution of rock music and the need for new headliner opportunities.
