The Inspiration Behind ‘Rose Marie’
At the core of ‘Rose Marie’ lies a poignant tale inspired by August Benjamin’s paternal grandmother. A German-born Jew, she fled her homeland as Hitler rose to power. Forced to hide in Paris for a year with her mother, she would often gaze longingly at the children playing in the streets, acutely aware that joining them was a luxury they could not afford. Eventually, they found refuge on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where she converted to Catholicism, marking a significant turn in her life.
The Journey to Freedom
As the narrative unfolds, we follow Rose Marie as she embarks on a life-altering journey to America, leaving everything behind in pursuit of her dreams. Benjamin captures her urgency and determination as she navigates the challenges of moving to Los Angeles. With an energetic guitar riff and a steady drumbeat, the music mirrors her fervor and ambition. Remarkably, Rose Marie was only 13 years old during this tumultuous period, navigating experiences far beyond her years.
A New Life Realized
Despite the adversity she faced, Rose Marie ultimately carves out a fulfilling life for herself. Residing in the Valley, she raises seven children and reflects on her journey while hosting them around the Christmas dinner table. In this moment of gratitude, she recognizes that she has achieved the life she always dreamed of, a life filled with love and family.
