Reflecting on Her Journey
In an exclusive interview with PopCrush, Cochrane reflected on her journey from working odd jobs to fund her musical dreams. When asked what would surprise her younger self, who caddied and sang at a seafood restaurant to pay for studio time, she expressed gratitude for her achievements. “I don’t think she’d be surprised by anything, honestly. Quite literally everything I’ve been manifesting for myself the last five years has come true,” she shared.
Sonic Surprises Await
Regarding her new album, Cochrane teased, “I’m throwing a lot of sonic surprises at everyone.” While her lyrics remain a priority, she highlighted the creativity of her producers, hinting at innovative sounds that fans can look forward to, such as “little vocal chops and synth lines.”
Building a Unique Universe
Cochrane has successfully created a distinct universe around her music. She first realized she was world-building with her track “Existential Crisis at the Tennis Club,” which gained traction on social media. The creative process for this song involved crafting a whimsical narrative that inspired her visuals. “When I had the budget to create my first real music video (Shapeshifting), the release of that song felt like a debut single,” she recalled, signifying her transition into the pop world.
The Surreal Nature of Success
Reflecting on her journey, Cochrane mentioned the challenge of convincing others of her vision while maintaining her self-belief. “I spent four years debating whether or not I was just delusional and untalented,” she said. However, the moment she started writing more authentically, everything clicked into place. “Seeing people singing my overthought and hyper-specific lyrics back to me challenges the deep-seated belief I had in my incompetence,” she added, emphasizing the powerful connection she shares with her audience.
