Interview with Hisashi Suzuki: The Guitarist of Blaze
Current Activities of Blaze
Hi, this is Hisashi Suzuki, the guitarist from Blaze, based in Osaka, Japan. First of all, I’d like to clarify that this interview represents my personal views; the other members may have different opinions. Currently, we are continuing our activities at our own pace, performing live about once or twice a month.
History of Blaze
Formation and Early Years
Blaze was formed in late 1998 by myself, Wataru Shiota (vocals), Kenichi Kuwahara (bass), and Tsuneo Shibatani (drums). We began playing gigs every second month starting in 1999.
Challenges and Hiatus
Initially, we released a 2-track demo CDR in 2001, which received positive reviews in small fanzines in Japan. However, after the drummer left in December 2001, we struggled to find a replacement for two years. In 2003, Mr. Yamamoto joined, but we faced challenges due to member sickness and unemployment. We resumed regular activity in 2006 and released our first album in 2007. After Mr. Yamamoto left in 2009, Mr. Funabiki joined the lineup.
The Long Silence
Despite our activity since 2007 and the release of our 6-track EP, “The Rock Dinosaur EP,” on High Roller Records in 2014, we faced a significant gap in recording new material due to economic factors and time constraints.
Musical Style and Inspirations
Defining Blaze’s Music
Our motto is “passionate, pathetique hard rock.” I prefer sounds that convey sadness without darkness, bright at first listen but with a melancholic undertone. It’s a complex feeling to describe.
Musical Influences
I was deeply influenced by hard rock and heavy metal during 1980-1981, which roots my sound in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). Additionally, my love for 60s and 70s classic rock continues to inspire my music.
Latest Album: “OUT THROUGH THE DOOR”
Recording Experience
We released our second studio album, “OUT THROUGH THE DOOR,” under No Remorse Records. The recording process felt similar to our first album, but I believe the sound is closer to our actual style. I am eager to incorporate more ideas from different people in the future.
Comparing Albums
The essence of the music I want to express remains unchanged, so I don’t see a significant difference between our self-titled debut and the latest album. However, the artwork for the new album is professionally done and fantastic!
Audience Reception and Future Plans
Fan Reception
The response to our latest album has been generally positive among our existing supporters, although I’m unsure if we have attracted new fans. I would be delighted if our fanbase gradually grows.
Collaboration with No Remorse Records
Our deal with No Remorse began with a promise made during our appearance at Up The Hammers in Athens in 2014. Although it took longer than expected to materialize, I reached out to Chris from No Remorse, who expressed interest in working with us. I am very grateful for his support.
Future Album Prospects
Regarding future albums, that’s a question for No Remorse Records. I need to prepare first, and while I have some song ideas, I haven’t conceptualized the next album yet.
Live Performances and Touring Preferences
Clubs vs. Festivals
I enjoy both club shows and festivals equally. The most important aspect for me is creating my own sound and adapting to the best sound for the occasion. In 2024, I had a wonderful experience performing at Pyrenean Warriors Open Air in Torreilles, France, and I’m thankful for our gigs in Athens, Bucharest, and Madrid.
Strongest Fanbase
While we have a dedicated fanbase in Japan, we also appreciate the support we receive from Greece and other countries, which is incredibly encouraging.
Future Goals for Blaze
I don’t see a finish line ahead of me; my goal is to continue creating and performing music as long as my passion lasts. I just want to keep rocking until I can no longer do so.
Conclusion
Thank you for taking the time to read this interview. I invite you to give our music a listen and hope you enjoy it as much as we love creating it.
