A Visual Experience: The Music Video
Earth vs. Space
The music video for ‘Rosetta’ is a juxtaposition of scenes captured on Earth and in the vastness of space. The band is featured in Young’s house, showcasing a polished and cinematic representation of their reality. However, upon venturing into space, the visuals take on a different character, transforming into a whimsical collage of cardboard cut-outs, homemade costumes, and a spaceship created in a friend’s garage. This transition lends the space sequences a tactile and handcrafted science fiction aesthetic.
Directorial Vision
Matthew Mourgides, who directed the Earth sequences, centered the concept around the dichotomy of routine and the desire for escapism. He explains, “The music immediately gave me this feeling of repetition and escape, of being trapped in the rhythms of everyday life while dreaming of something bigger. I wanted the three band members to almost feel like fragments of the same person, moving through this endless routine, until the world they’ve been dreaming about starts breaking through and eventually becomes their reality.”
Communicating Without Words
In the absence of lyrics to narrate the story, the emotional journey is conveyed through the instrumental composition and the evocative visuals. The musicians transition from their mundane surroundings into an imaginative realm that reflects their creative impulses.
