Exploring Estani’s Musical Journey: ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’
Introduction to Estani’s New Direction
Following on from the release of her single, ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’, we spoke with singer-songwriter and vocal coach, Estani, about what the track means to her and what we can expect next.
Inspiration Behind the Project
‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ takes your music in a new direction—what initially inspired you to start this project?
‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ marks a significant change from my usual musical style. The inspiration came from a nostalgic journey back to my childhood. After moving from LA to Texas, I rediscovered my grandmother’s collection of 45s, which reignited my desire to capture a cherished moment in time with her. While my initial plan was for her to re-record these songs, the timing didn’t align. With her blessing, I decided to reinterpret her music and recreate that special sound.
The Significance of Re-recording Grandmother’s Songs
Was it special for you to re-record your grandmother’s songs for this album? What makes ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ a standout track?
This project holds immense personal significance as the music is deeply tied to my memories. The best moments of my childhood were often accompanied by the sounds of my grandmother’s music, creating a backdrop to my daily life. This album is unique and sacred to me, as it encapsulates those cherished memories. While no one can replicate my grandmother’s voice, I strive to embody the joy, celebration, and happiness that ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ brings. It stands out as one of the few upbeat tracks on the album, contrasting with the more heartfelt boleros featured elsewhere.
Capturing Sonic Elements of Conjunto Music
What sonic elements did you include in the song to capture the essence of this genre?
In creating this album, I aimed to maintain a traditional and authentic sound while integrating contemporary production elements. The track features essential instruments such as the accordion, drums, bajo sexto, and guitar. Working with producer Stephen Sanchez, we achieved a vintage, nostalgic sound while ensuring the overall mix and vocal quality felt modern and vibrant.
Balancing Tradition and Modernity
How did you go about balancing a traditional and contemporary sound for this song? Did you run into any challenges or surprises in the recording and production process?
Initially, we recorded ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ as a waltz in an effort to stay true to the original. However, something felt off, and I couldn’t pinpoint it. After some discussion, Max Baca from Los Texmaniacs suggested we reimagine it as an upbeat corrido, which added a contemporary Americana vibe I hadn’t anticipated. The main challenge was finding the right balance between preserving traditional elements while enhancing the production. Beto Martinez from Group Fantasma was instrumental in adding just the right touches, like organ layers, to elevate the sound.
Collaborating with Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs
What was it like working with Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs on this track? Why did you choose to showcase the song with a live performance in the music video?
Working with Max Baca exceeded my expectations. Initially, I aimed to collaborate with another group in LA, but when that fell through, a mutual friend suggested I contact Max. To my surprise, he was interested after hearing my story and music. Max is incredibly down-to-earth and knowledgeable, which helped maintain the authenticity of the sound. Choosing to feature a live performance in the music video was to reflect the spontaneous and genuine essence of the song. ICFS studios provided the perfect vintage backdrop that complemented the vibe I wanted to capture.
Preserving Conjunto Music
The release of this song has blossomed into a larger project—talk to us about your efforts to preserve and bring awareness to Conjunto music.
This project grew from my desire to understand and promote the Conjunto genre. My journey began with listening to my grandmother’s music, which led me to explore the rich tradition of South Texas music. Inspired by how Buena Vista Social Club popularized Cuban Son, I hope to shine a light on Conjunto in a similar way. Initially, I wanted my grandmother to re-record these songs and connect with surviving musicians from her era, but many have since passed. Instead, I’m gathering stories and memories to introduce this beautiful genre to a new audience.
Impact on Listeners
What impact do you hope ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ has on listeners, especially those becoming interested in Conjunto for the first time?
I hope ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ sparks love and curiosity among new listeners and connects them with others who have cherished Conjunto music throughout their lives. While I’ve always gravitated toward Neo soul and jazz, I’m proud to return to my roots in Conjunto. I envision a future where new sounds evolve from traditional genres, similar to how artists like Bad Bunny have blended various Latin influences. I believe there’s room for innovation within Conjunto, and I’m excited to explore those possibilities.
Future Projects and Conclusion
Tell us more about the upcoming album and documentary. What does the future hold for Estani?
The upcoming album/EP serves as a heartfelt love letter, with ‘Mi Suerte Ha Cambiado’ being the lively exception. After the release, I’ll focus on finalizing the documentary, which I hope to release by late summer. As for what comes next, I often plan to take breaks from music, but I find myself drawn back in! I miss performing my Neo soul and Latin jazz pieces, and I have new creative avenues I’d like to explore. However, my main priority remains sharing this album and breathing new life into these beloved songs.
