The Return of Gadget: A Deep Dive into “Coerced” EP
Aging with Attitude
The trick to aging gracefully might just be to stay perpetually irritated. Swedish grindcore band Gadget exemplifies this philosophy, making it appear effortless. Established in 1999, the band boasts a wealth of experience and precision that accompanies their years. Their latest EP, Coerced, unfolds much like grindcore aficionados anticipate—abrasive, explosive, and economical. However, the seasoned nature of Gadget allows for a smoother delivery, showcasing their mastery of the genre.
Intensity and Innovation
Intensity permeates every note of Coerced, with the band only momentarily hitting the brakes during the five-minute ambient track “False Pulse.” This track, however, is not a mere filler; it reflects a deliberate approach, employing dynamics and a gradually evolving structure that inverts the EP’s overall frenetic energy rather than merely extending its runtime.
A New Era with New Voices
The EP serves as a blistering showcase for new vocalist Emilia Henriksson, whose piercing shrieks complement the already established sound of Gadget. Additionally, Kristofer Jankarls’ incorporation into the band as a second guitarist and vocalist adds a fresh dynamic to the lineup. While both members joined in 2023, they bring a sense of renewed vigor to a group that hasn’t released new music since 2016. The four-year hiatus spent writing and refining their sound ultimately leads to this powerful comeback.
Behind the Music: Band Insights
The band shared their thoughts on the creation of Coerced:
“This is Coerced – eight tracks that we finally recorded last year. Originally it was intended as a 7″ EP but it grew out of that fast. Mainly written during the pandemic, it pretty much shares the style of the last EP, but it also delves deeper into other noisier and weirder territories. It’s massive and harsh, and most importantly: it’s our first proper release with the new lineup. With Emilia and Kristofer joining the band, it made it what it is. Without them, it probably wouldn’t have been possible. It’s been fun, difficult, and challenging. Actually, two out of five had to wear long-term ECG monitors during this process. Coerced is probably the most focused and best output since the Funeral March LP, and we’re really excited that it’s finally finished.”
