Hi Mari, thanks for speaking to Essentially Pop! Your latest album, ‘Girl About Town’, is set for release on the 4th of September this year. What can fans expect from it, and what’s your favourite song on the album?

“I think it’s back to the kind of pop people know me for, with tinges of soul and jazz— a hybrid of all three genres I’ve spent my career singing. Some people have said it’s very ‘Mari Wilson’. It’s upbeat and optimistic since the whole writing and recording process was just that. Adrian York and I decided to just have some fun; there was no pressure. I hadn’t even thought about releasing a new album until we had written three or four songs, and I loved what we were doing. It’s hard to choose a favourite, but maybe ‘Kaleidoscope’ for its psychedelia!”

Celebrating Authenticity with ‘Come On Out’

We’re loving ‘Come On Out’! Such a catchy song with a positive message about being your authentic self. We’re also loving the vibrant, retro feel of the music video. What inspired this song and the video?

“The inspiration came from someone I know who has mental health issues and often struggles to leave the house. Sometimes, just going out for a walk can shift things a little. Looking up is something that really helps; that physical movement can lift your spirit. It’s about the simple things in life that make us happy.”

Romantic Vibes of ‘Love Letter’

‘Love Letter’ was released alongside ‘Come On Out’, showcasing a more romantic side. What led to the decision to release both songs together?

“It was actually the idea of my team working on the album release. I didn’t even know we did that anymore, especially without vinyl 45rpm double A sides! Initially, I thought it was a bit odd, but it gained a lot of interest, which I’m glad about. It highlights two completely different sides of my writing and vocal performance. The song was inspired by An Evening with Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars’ and Anderson Paak’s album, which I absolutely love. I saw them in Vegas a few years ago, and it was brilliant.”

Four Decades in Music

You’ve been in the music industry for over 40 years. What keeps you motivated?

“Isn’t it just fabulous to do this for a living? Singing and writing stories to sing about is truly special. What keeps me going is performing live, which I’ve been doing since day one. I love being on stage and creating different emotions with each song; it’s magical and totally in the moment.”

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

What advice would you give to those looking to enter the music business today? Is there anything you wish you had known when you were starting out?

“That’s a tough one because the industry has changed so much. However, one thing that hasn’t changed is the necessity of total self-belief. If your manager or record company suggests something that doesn’t sit well with you, always trust your gut. Don’t assume others know better; music is organic and shouldn’t be swayed by trends or algorithms. Enjoying the process became easier for me when I took control, even if I made mistakes along the way. Mistakes are necessary but can be easier to live with if they’re your own. Also, know your style and what makes you unique—how you can grow to stand out.”

You have a dedicated fan base, many of whom have been with you from the beginning. What would you like to say to them?

“They’re fantastic! I receive lovely emails from them, which have encouraged me over the years. So, a huge thank you! I hope they love this album, and I look forward to seeing some of them at my upcoming shows, where I’ll be performing not only the new album but also songs from my back catalogue.”
