Second Song was recorded using analog equipment at the renowned Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. It was produced by Lou Adler, alongside Neil Young and Niko Bolas, who are credited collectively as the Volume Dealers.

The track “Casting Me Away From You” first appeared as an unreleased recording on 2009’s The Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972, originating from a 1965 session with Comrie Smith.
Similarly, the album’s closing piece, “I’ll Love You Forever,” was also featured in the 2009 box set as an unreleased recording from 1964, created with his band the Squires.
