Robert Kuhn: The Visionary Behind GALVEZTON and “Roll To G-Town”
Returning to GALVEZTON: A Musical Homecoming
What keeps bringing you back to GALVEZTON in your music?
For me, there’s nowhere else that feels quite as right. GALVEZTON is not just a location; it’s my home, my community, and an alternate reality filled with artists, musicians, poets, healers, surfers, skaters, and free-spirited individuals. This vibrant culture permeates my very being, and when I create music, it springs from this place. The musicians who join me in crafting our sound are all part of this community, and we are deeply connected to the music that flows from it. The atmosphere is eclectic, welcoming, and free-spirited, making it a natural sanctuary for my creative endeavors.
Global Influences: Shaping a Unique Sound
You’ve spent time all over the world. How did those experiences shape your sound?
Initially, I had to let go of the stale sounds and teachings that had defined my upbringing. Once I freed myself from those constraints, I became open to the diverse musical influences from around the globe. I absorbed new languages and rhythms, which I later infused into my music back in Galveston. When I first started creating in this space, I was often labeled a reggae/world artist due to my Caribbean influences, but the rich musical tapestry of Texas soon re-entered my life, filtered through my newly opened ears. Every region has its folk music and country influences, and young artists everywhere are continuously pushing those boundaries. Add some psychedelia, and you find the love and joy in the music.
The Evolution of a Community
How did everything grow from one event into the bigger community and music movement you have now?
The growth was a collective effort driven by those who shared my vision. When we hosted the inaugural La Izquierda Surf and Music Festival, we were uncertain about the turnout. However, the response was overwhelming, with people flocking to the event. By the second year, it had grown even larger and more organized, but then the pandemic hit, halting our momentum. During the lockdown, we felt the void of live music acutely. It was then that I proposed hosting concerts at a historic bandshell in a community park on the Seawall. This outdoor venue allowed us to gather safely, and we launched the “Save the Locals” concert series, which not only revived our music scene but also laid the groundwork for the return of La Izquierda, using generated revenue to support further concerts. Each season has brought growth, as more people recognize the power of community building through music.
The Sound of GALVEZTON
GALVEZTON blends a lot of different styles; what inspired that sound?
The Gulf Coast is a melting pot of musical genres, and we are immersed in it. The region boasts a rich history of country, blues, folk, rock ‘n’ roll, surf music, garage, psychedelic, cumbia, Tejano, Norteño, hip-hop, Cajun, Creole, urban electronica, and a plethora of indie styles.
The Journey of “Roll To G-Town”
Did you expect “Roll To G-Town” to catch on the way it has?
Every time I write a song, I hope it resonates with others, which is why I document them. I remember feeling excited about this particular track, thinking, “People are going to love this!” However, it was surprising when Houston hip-hop legends Bun-B and Paul Wall expressed interest in collaborating on it. It felt like a breakthrough moment.
Inspiration Behind the Song
What inspired the story behind the song?
The song’s narrative stems from a personal experience. A few years ago, I found myself in a situation where I had to pay off a debt on the North Side of Houston. Amidst a whirlwind of tours and relationships, I felt a surge of happiness one Friday afternoon when I received a little extra cash. I hopped in my car, singing about my anticipation of returning to the island where the “honey is sweet, but the girls are mean.” It was a spontaneous moment that inspired the song.
Collaborative Magic
How did the collaborations on this track come together?
Texas country music star Rich O’Toole caught my performance of “Roll To G-Town” during one of our festivals and was eager to record it for his upcoming album. He asked me to teach him the chords and lyrics, and he created an incredible version. Rich, who is connected to Bun-B through the Houston scene, shared it with him, prompting Bun-B to propose a remix. As fate would have it, they ran into Paul Wall at a coffee shop, and he also wanted to join in. This collaboration reflects how deeply the feeling of rolling to G-town resonates with the Houston community.
The Vision for the Music Video
What was your vision for the video?
When I visited an old abandoned strip club outside of Galveston, I felt inspired by its haunted, Tarantino-like ambiance. The club, which had been closed for decades, was like a time capsule, and I envisioned a video that captured its ghostly essence. I wanted vintage cinematography to enhance the aesthetic. Although I lacked a budget and filmmaking experience, Juan Lazo took charge of the project. He transformed what began as a short promo into a full-length music video, filled with vibrant colors and local scenes, all driven by his passion for showcasing Galveston. I’m incredibly grateful for his contribution; without him, this wouldn’t have been possible.
Looking Ahead: Ocean Cabaret
What can fans expect from ‘Ocean Cabaret’ as a full project?
This upcoming project will offer an intimate glimpse into my musical journey. I wrote, performed, engineered, and recorded all the tracks myself in our La Izquierda Records studio. The sound is minimalistic, featuring healing tones and binaural frequencies from an analog synthesizer along with acoustic guitars. The album primarily consists of love songs, quiet melodies, and soothing tracks that fit well for home listening or road trips. Although there are a few upbeat songs, many were inspired by my wife’s preferences, even if they stray from our surf-rock ‘n’ roll format. “Roll to G-town” stands out as a unique piece that balances the entire collection.
The Power of Connection
What does it mean to you to see people connecting with what you’re building, and anything else you’d like to share with fans?
Seeing people connect with my work reaffirms my commitment to this path. The essence of my music is all about connection—whether through live performances or recorded tracks. Admittedly, there are days when I feel lost or question my journey. But moments like this, filled with encouragement and recognition, remind me to keep pushing forward. What if I continue? What if things align perfectly? What if I find joy? What if I learn to let go?
