Exploring the Journey of a Rock and Metal Writer
From Hobbyist to Author
My journey into the world of rock and metal writing was never a predetermined path. In fact, it was the quarantine that sparked this unexpected adventure. While working from home, I found myself with ample quiet time for reflection. One of my passions, as illustrated in the accompanying photos, is collecting 8-Track Tape versions of my favorite artists. This unique hobby led me to invite Martin Popoff, an author I greatly admire, onto my YouTube channel to discuss his memories of this vintage format. During our discussion, we delved into the allure of RCO (Record Club Only) versions of albums, which were produced until the late 1980s despite retail stores halting their sales. Martin’s excitement about this topic prompted him to suggest that there might be a book idea there. Thus, my first book, UNSPOOLED: An Adventure in 8-Tracks, was born.
The Inspiration Behind RED ON BLACK
My latest book, RED ON BLACK, is a tribute to the prolific Sammy Hagar. As a massive fan of his work with Van Halen, Montrose, Chickenfoot, and his extensive solo career, I realized that there was a significant gap in literature focusing solely on his solo albums. Hagar’s relentless creativity in an era when many artists slow down has always intrigued me, leading to the decision to write this book.
The Publishing Process
The journey from concept to publication for RED ON BLACK was a learning experience. My first book was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, utilizing a printing company in Ontario. I later discovered that Amazon offered a straightforward self-publishing option, which streamlined the process significantly. This allowed me to have my books shipped directly from Amazon once approved. I also owe a debt of gratitude to my friend Matt Phillps from GoNorthDesign, who manages the visual aspects of my books, making them visually appealing and professional.
Tim’s Vinyl Confessions
My YouTube channel, Tim’s Vinyl Confessions, has been a platform for my passion since 2014. It has become my brand, serving as an extension of the themes I explore in my books. Through the channel, I share my love for music and the stories behind it, creating a community of like-minded enthusiasts.
Research Revelations
During my research for RED ON BLACK, I was astonished to discover the wide array of artists who have covered Sammy Hagar’s songs. From Bette Midler to Megadeth, and even a French version of one of his tracks, the diversity of interpretations speaks volumes about the impact of Hagar’s music.
Feedback and Reception
The initial feedback on RED ON BLACK has been overwhelmingly positive. Although I have yet to hear from Sammy Hagar himself, I’ve had the opportunity to appear on podcasts alongside him, increasing the likelihood that he may come across my work. I genuinely hope he appreciates the effort I put into capturing his story.
Responses from Other Artists
In relation to my previous works, I’ve received encouraging feedback from members of Y&T, including bassist Aaron Leigh and guitarist John Nymann, both of whom engaged with my channel. For my Kansas book, former vocalist John Elefante contributed insights that enriched the narrative, while founding member Kerry Livgren praised it online. Such acknowledgments are significant milestones in my writing career.
Availability of Books
All four of my books, including RED ON BLACK, are available on Amazon in various countries, making it easy for fans to access my work.
Future Projects
While I have several bands in mind for future books, I prefer to keep those details under wraps for now. Stay tuned for more announcements!
Writing Routine
My writing process primarily involves using a computer, as I struggle to read my handwriting. I tend to write when inspiration strikes, often finding that early mornings with a strong cup of coffee are my most productive times.
Advice for Aspiring Writers
It’s surreal for me to label myself as a writer. If I can embark on this journey, anyone can. If you have an idea, pursue it wholeheartedly. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back; I’ve wrestled with those intrusive thoughts too.
Conclusion
My journey as a rock and metal writer has been a remarkable evolution fueled by passion and unexpected opportunities. As I continue to explore the rich tapestry of music through my writing, I encourage others to embrace their creative impulses and share their stories with the world.
