Hanna Andrea: A Gen-Z Pop Artist Challenging the Phone Obsession
Interview with Polly Havelock
Polly Havelock catches up with the rising star Hanna Andrea to discuss her new anti-social media anthem “GET OFF YOUR PHONE,” the significance of being present in life, and what fans can expect from her upcoming sophomore EP, “Braveheart.”
Balancing Life and Art
Finding Time Amidst Chaos
Hi Hanna, how are you?
I’m good! Very busy with college finals coming up, casting for the musical that I wrote, MUSE (It’s going to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer so I’m very excited!), and promotion for my new releases, but I’m so happy to have so many wonderful things happening in my life.
Unpacking “GET OFF YOUR PHONE”
A Commentary on Modern Culture
You’ve just released your brand new single, ‘GET OFF YOUR PHONE’. What experiences inspired you to write this track?
It was a few years ago, before I really got into social media. I was with friends who I don’t see often, and we were all on our phones, missing out on each other’s company. This kept happening, and it made me think, “I should write a song about this.”
The Importance of Being Present
Why do you think it’s crucial to encourage people to live in the moment?
Social media has its beauty, helping me stay connected with friends worldwide. However, when you’re sharing a moment with someone in person, it’s vital to be present and fully engaged. Enjoying those moments is irreplaceable.
Nostalgic Sounds and Influences
The track has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of the 90s-2000s rock-pop era. Were there any influences from that time?
Not intentionally! I didn’t realize it sounded like a 90s-2000s track until after the fact. My friends compare it to Paramore, which might have influenced me, even if subconsciously.
Creative Process Behind the Music
Can you describe your creative process for this track?
I was less involved in the production of this song than usual. It was a collaboration in L.A. where we started with just a guitar. The song took unexpected turns, and I had to adjust my vision, but I ended up loving the production!
Looking Ahead: The “Braveheart” EP
Exploration of Genres
How does ‘GET OFF YOUR PHONE’ fit into your upcoming EP, ‘Braveheart’? Is it representative of the EP’s overall sound?
‘GET OFF YOUR PHONE’ is somewhat different from the rest of the EP. My previous single, ‘Braveheart’, is a better representation of the overall sound. I love exploring genres and creating music that tells the best story.
Influence of Dual Cultures
Having grown up between Norway and the US, how did these locations shape your songwriting?
Both places have inspired me immensely. Norway’s nature provides a constant muse, while the intensity of life in the US shapes my music’s emotional aspects. The contrast has enriched my experiences and creativity.
Emotional Depth and Theatricality
Your sound is often compared to AURORA and Laufey. How does ‘Braveheart’ expand on this?
‘Braveheart’ leans more towards mainstream pop than my previous album, ‘Stranded in the Middle,’ but it still retains the emotional depth and theatrical elements that resonate with listeners. I aim to write about topics that reflect my life and experiences.
A Musical Journey to Edinburgh
You’ve composed songs for a musical set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. How did this come about?
This project started as a high school endeavor with no funding. Thanks to passionate collaborators, we managed to bring it to Lincoln Center and now the Fringe. I initially wrote one song, but as the show developed, I was asked to contribute more, leading to this exciting opportunity!
Future Aspirations
Looking Forward to 2026
What are your hopes for the remainder of 2026?
I’m focused on the present, especially with rehearsals for MUSE and the Fringe. After that, I’m eager to continue writing, recording, and sharing more from the ‘Braveheart’ EP, which is set to release later this year.
Conclusion
Hanna Andrea is not just another pop artist; she’s a voice for her generation, tackling the challenges of modern technology while staying grounded in her roots. With her unique sound and profound messages, she’s poised to make a lasting impact in the music industry.
